Need fixings for your Forgeries forgeries ? We've got old-fashioned rose-head nails, from 25mm to 75mm
Traditional T-hinges, often called Garnets by old carpenters
A work-horse among hinges... a machine for opening a door, evolved over centuries to provide maximum hold at minimum cost. The long arm of the traditional T-hinge provides an extra brace for boarded doors and spreads the fixings over a wider area of wood.
The deep shoulder and generous fixings make the garnet strong enough to hang the carpenter, not just the door. Forgeries' hand-made garnets - aka 'penny-enders - all have a welded knuckle and a proper sized pin to give this classic traditional hinge a timeless elegance.
Length ? They'll all do the job, all strong enough to hang a fire door. If you want a rule, carpenters will tell you 'two-thirds' of the door width but whatever looks right to you is the answer. Even a longer one at the top, shorter at the bottom, can look good.
Other versions include the Strap and Pintle, the Bean (an American, New England pattern), the more ornate Arrow Head, the Dove-tail (for some reason a version widely used in Wales and on chest lids) and the Snakes Tongue (French, the end of the long strap split in two, with each arm curled in or out)
The Big Daddy of our traditional T-hinge range.... plain and simple, tough enough to take a slamming oak door. It looks good too on wider doors and even the garden gate (with a good coat of paint !) The shoulder, its edge offset from the pin centre by ??mm, fits most door linings. All hinges are priced per pair. If you need an odd number please e-mail Sales@forgeriesonline.co.uk when you order.
Our most popular penny-ender….. and probably the most widely used for the last three or four centuries. It succeeded the strap and pintle, a simple bar looped at the end to fit over an L-shaped pin driven into the door frame. It is neater, uses less metal and makes for a better fitting door. You couldn't lift it off to make a trestle table for killing the pig or a family wake…. but now you don't need to, so the garnet is the supreme hinge for old-fashioned boarded, ledge-and-brace doors. All hinges are priced per pair. If you need an odd number please e-mail Sales@forgeriesonline.co.uk when you order
The usual choice for a normal, standard 27-inch (685mm)door, our work-horse, sometimes used with a 12-inch version as the lower hinge if the door looks tall or narrow, or with a third hinge halfway down the door. Traditional practice is use three T-hinges or garnet hinges to stop a door warping in an unusually damp position, like a bathroom. All hinges are priced per pair. If you need an odd number,

The choice for a really narrow door or a big cupboard or wardrobe but still man enough for an ordinary door...or it can look good in a trio, in the middle between a pair of larger garnet hinges. We've seem them too on the inside of a box or chest. All hinges are priced per pair. If you need an odd number please e-mail Sales@forgeriesonline.co.uk when you order.
We're talking cupboards now or the door to the cellar, or the attic or that cubby-hole under the stairs. But it's still strong enough for a full size door. Not quite so demanding of attention as its bigger brothers. Widely used to put the finishing touch to a traditional kitchen. All hinges are priced per pair. If you need an odd number please e-mail Sales@forgeriesonline.co.uk when you order.
For cupboards, cabinet work, furniture, window seats, boxes. Not quite small enough to be called 'dainty' …. perhaps 'compact' would be a better word. Like its big brother, the 10-inch garnet, it's much used by kitchen designers where the distinctive shape of a traditional T-hinge can provide some cohesion to a range of cupboards. All hinges are priced per pair. If you need an odd number please e-mail Sales@forgeriesonline.co.uk when you order
It's very much like the 'straight 8' garnet hinge, just as strong, a little more dainty but still not 'miniature'. The shoulder piece is the same as the next two larger versions in the range so it makes a perfect choice for a mix-and-match.... and it'll still take a wardrobe door or even the trap into the roof space. All hinges are priced per pair. If you need an odd number please e-mail Sales@forgeriesonline.co.uk when you order.
The look without the action….. sometimes a bit of fakery is just what's needed. All our t-hinges are available as blanks at about half the cost of the real thing, effectively converting a butt hinge into something far more decorative. They're quite handy too for all sorts of things…. We can bend them into shelf brackets or candle sconces if you ask us. And sometimes they're useful for holding a timber in place, like the two halves of a dresser, or strapping up a small beam.
